UPDATE from PennDOT:

The ramp from southbound I-81 to southbound I-83 was reopened to traffic about an hour ago. The missing guiderail has been marked by construction barrels. A contractor will be brought in, most likely later this week, to replace the guiderail.

Clean-up continues along the ramp from northbound I-83 to southbound I-83, with traffic limited to a single lane. There is a back-up on northbound I-83, so motorists should be alert to stopped traffic in the left lane.

Original Story:

The ramp from northbound Interstate 83 to southbound Interstate 81 will be closed to traffic starting at around 11 a.m. today so that work crews can remove the debris that fell onto the ramp from a crash early this morning from an overhead ramp in the I-81 Exit 70 interchange in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County. The debris that earlier closed the road was pushed back in order to restore traffic at 6:40 a.m. for the busy morning commuting hours. Crews now need to remove the debris from alongside the ramp. This closure should last around two to three hours. For motorists on northbound I-83 and westbound Route 322, this is officially designated as I-83 Exit 51A.

The ramp from southbound I-81 to southbound I-83 remains closed from this morning’s crash. About 100 feet of guiderail was destroyed. PennDOT maintenance crews will install concrete barrier temporarily to replace the guiderail to make conditions safe to reopen the ramp. The ramp is not expected to reopen until early to mid-afternoon. Permanent guiderail installation will be scheduled for a later date when the guiderail crew and material is available.

These actions are the result of a crash involving two tractor trailers shortly after 3 a.m. this morning, forcing the immediate closure of these two major ramps in the Interstate 81 Exit 70 interchange with Interstate 83. The crash with the two tractor trailers closed the ramp from southbound I-81 to southbound I-83. One of the trucks was hauling trash and capsized; the other truck was hauling insulation and remained upright. Debris from the crash fell onto the ramp underneath and prompted the closure of northbound I-83 to southbound I-81 until crews cleared and reopened the ramp at around 6:40 a.m.
