A group of doctors-in-training at Penn State Hershey Medical Center are getting hands on experience on how to respond to a mass casualty disaster.  Since the Boston Marathon bombings one year ago, doctors were working on ways to train residents to take charge of a traumatic scene.

Wednesday, at the Life Lion Hangar, 15 residents participated in simulation of a bomb explosion at the Hershey Marathon.  The pre-hospital drill gives trainees a chance to experience a mass casualty incident from terrorism, such as a bomb blast.

Dr. Jeffrey Lubin says, “Unfortunately these things happen and our doctors need to understand what scenes like this are like, how they could take care of patients, how they are being taken care of before they get to them.”

Dr. Lubin says he plans to infuse active EMS training in the overall curriculum.
