New Jersey abortion counselor films her own abortion

This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.

An abortion counselor in New Jersey learned she was pregnant, but at age 25 Emily Letts decided she was not ready to be a mother. Letts said she searched online for a video of what an abortion procedure actually looked like, but was unable to find one. So she decided that she would have her own procedure filmed and put online to educate other women in her position.

“A first trimester abortion takes three to five minutes. It is safer than giving birth. There is no cutting, and risk of infertility is less than 1 percent,” Letts wrote in Cosmopolitan magazine. “Yet women come into the clinic all the time terrified that they are going to be cut open, convinced that they won’t be able to have kids after the abortion. The misinformation is amazing.”

The video above is not graphic and Letts appears calm throughout the procedure.

For anyone to even think about getting an abortion is heartless. An unborn child is still a living being and should be well taken care of like a child already born. If a woman gets pregnant but is not ready for that responsibility then she should consider adoption… There are so many people in the world who would love to have children but are not able to for medical reasons and their only way is adoption. So I wish people would reconsider before killing these precious beings.

    • MyTakeOnIt

We all know how well adoption works, don't we? There are people lining up in the streets to adopt all the foster kids now, aren't there?
People either want children of their own or don't want any. There is no large class of people that are saying, "hmm, I'm going to not have children and adopt some so I can save the world of unwanted children." Then there are the people who are unable to have children for some reason and they only wish to adopt a child from some perfect background.

To the “People either want children of their own or they dont want any at all” guy… Mytakeonit, You just sound like an under-educated, ignorant fool. What makes you think you know what every single person in world wants? I’m glad I don’t know you. You are entitled to you’re opinion. I’m entitled to mine. In this case, in my opinion, you are an idiot who feels the need to express their outlandish opinion. Open you’re eyes buddy. What you want or have may not be what someone else wants or has. People amaze me.

        • MyTakeOnIt

First, you are correct. I did sound exclusive the way I made the statement you quoted. I should have worded it differently as I tried to generalize different belief groups.
Second, you are looking for the the word "your" and not "you're".
Third, I responded to a comment that was made before mine which cannot then be considered a "need to express (my) outlandish opinion". The "idiot" part is simply your anger that my opinions and observations are not the same as yours.
Fourth, are you raising adopted children? There appears to be a high percentage of people who do not practice what they preach.
Fifth, I am highly educated and try not to ignore anything, even the position of people who believe that abortion should never be considered. Because to them, I say, "then do not have abortions and teach your children your beliefs."

  • Erika

Heather, there are also "so many" kids that have been waiting years to be adopted. Your opinion is just that, yours. You may not have ever made the decision to abort a pregnancy but this is/was her body and she has the right to make any and all of the decisions related to it.

    • Kevin

Who cares about “her” body. The body in question is the body of the child she aborted. Now if she wanted to cut her arm or leg off then yeah you are are correct, it is her body and no one on earth should be able to raise a fuss about it.

It looks so easy! I mean why bother with trying to remember to take a pill everyday or interrupting an erotic moment when you can just kill the baby growing inside you, oops I mean terminate the fetus. It's her body right? Wake up people!!!! This is a film of an innocent life being taken. If we can't even realize that now with the technology we have to see inside the womb we are no better than the Nazis.

  • Alex

Irresponsible if you ask me. Reckless and careless sex got her to this point. Now for those that say freedom to choose, yes that's a given but come on you're going to have sex knowing full well what might happen just to push your agenda of killing unborn children unto others? I bet you she would have the heart to do this many times over not learning her lesson from the last. It's upsetting but hey, this country is all about freedom right?

My initial thought when I read the title of the story was that I hoped it was not a late term abortion because I am against that. If you have an "accident", make your decision about the pregnancy before it develops.

Analogy: A bird's nest dropped out of a large bush I needed to cut down. It was an accident. There were 3 eggs. My morals are that it was not as bad that three undeveloped eggs broke as it would be if three birds were killed from my not seeing the nest beforehand (call it a mistake or call it an accident as you wish).

Heartless human!! If you dont think she is ready for a child then she should get birth control.point blank
she is just another baby killer

  • Steven

Now I don't have a uterus, so I really can't take a stance on this subject, but i do believe it is logical to be anti-abortion and pro-choice. I don't agree with the government controlling anyone or anyone's body for any reason, but I would hope at the same time that women would choose to keep the baby.

Oh shut it you hypocritical right to lifers. You will in a second condone, putting a prisoner to death, start a war in which thousands of innocent people will die. Kill a doctor that performs abortions. Until you magically become Mahatma Gandhi or stop participating in religious groups that have a core message of destroying those who don't believe in your God…then put a friggin' sock in it you make me sick. If we were all as perfect and righteous as you wouldn't the world be great?

    • Alex

Hypocritical? I for one don't care about prisoners, they are there for a reason. Neither do I care for war, but hey I have to live in a world full of it because of reckless and careless people with power (similar to this lady). What does the occupation of a doctor mean? To save life's, not to take them away correct? No one is claiming to be righteous here, we're all human if you haven't noticed and we all make mistakes. But when you blame circumstances that could have been avoided mind you, no pity and no remorse needs to be given for those full of stupidity. So quit with your senseless and baseless rhetoric.

I used to be pro-choice but now I cant see how anyone could ever do this. Even if they were not ready seeing this video has changed my opinion. Im not outraged like I know most people will be, Im heartbroken. I had children young and abortion was absolutely out of the question for me just my personal choice at 18. I wasnt ready but I have become so much stronger because of my children. Still I know I cant change what has been done, Im against it. I never thought just by watching a video I could change how I see this issue. I am still firm in believing women should choose what they do but not by taking a growing child from your womb because your not ready. It just seems so evil sorry for the choice of words but its fitting.
