In the past year, nearly a dozen bicyclists died in motor vehicle related accidents in Pennsylvania, and an advocacy group is now honoring those victims.

Folks from Bicycle South Central PA gathered at the capital on Wednesday for the Ghost Bike Memorial. White Bicycle served as a reminder of the lives lost on the roadways.

The memorial follows the International Rise of Silence ride event which honors riders injured or killed by motorists. Advocates say their goal is to better educate motorists.

“One of the largest issues that we face is that we’re all about things bicycle and having bicycle paths, but having motorists understand that a bicycle is a vehicle. Bicyclists are there for transportation reasons. It’s not just a bunch of children playing on the roads, ” said BSCPA President, Richard Norford.

The group says the are working with PennDot to have the shoulders on the roadways widened.
