Rice received initial approval to enter a court program, which could result in the dismissal of a criminal charge against him.
The NFL star was facing an aggravated assault charge, after security cameras captured him pulling his then-fiancée out of an elevator.
The couple married a day after Rice was indicted.
If he stays out of trouble for a year, and completes family counseling, he will not have to go to trial.
Rice said, “I’m a happy father and a happy husband, that’s what matters.”
His attorney, Michael Diamondstein said, “He’s an excellent candidate. This is a national media but any of you people from Baltimore know he’s just a high character individual. He’s done a tremendous amount for the Baltimore community and this was a momentary lapse of reason and we hope both the court system and the prosecutor’s office agree.”
If convicted, Rice would have been looking at three-to-five years in prison.
