A Pennsylvania State Trooper was shot several times in Dauphin County on Sunday evening.
The trooper, who’s name has not been released, is currently recovering at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
As of 2 o’clock Monday morning, he is listed in stable condition.
The incident started around 6:30 Sunday evening when a man was driving in the area of Green Hill Road in West Hanover Township.
Police say he was hitting mailboxes with his car and then pulled into a driveway, where he barricaded himself inside a residence that police believe was his own.
“A neighbor actually pointed a trooper up to that residence and he said, ‘Hey I think I saw the vehicle go up there,’ and that’s when our trooper went up to the residence to investigate and that’s when he was confronted,” says Pennsylvania State Police Public Information Officer, Trooper Rob Hicks.
That’s when things made a turn for the worse.
The suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting the trooper multiple times.
“Our trooper was able to return some fire and retrieve from the scene at which point in time some local agencies responded to the area as well as our SERT team, they established a perimeter after a point in time the suspect did surrender and he was taken into custody,” says Trooper Hicks.
Members of the Pennsylvania State Police SERT team, Lower Paxton Township Police, Derry Township Police, and Swatara Township Police all responded to the call.
“I mean anytime you have a situation where shots are fired, especially one of our troopers gets shot, now we have a barricaded gunman type situation, it’s going to receive a lot of attention,” says Trooper Hicks.
The gunman, who is 49-years old, went into surgery around 1 o’clock Monday morning.
His name and condition are not being released.
