An East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County teen smashed into a cop car with a rock and stole a shot gun from inside.  He doesn’t get too far before police arrest him.

East Pennsboro Township police say a 19-year-old teen approached the police car Tuesday around 3:00 a.m. In unreleased police camera video, authorities say he seemed distraught.

Police Chief, Todd Bashore says, ” He was walking around and came up on our station and you can see him walking and pondering what he’s going to do.”

Police say the suspect picked up a large rock and smashed the window of the car and then worked his way into the gun lock.

Bashore says, “It was 10 to 15 minutes of banging and banging until it let loose and he could pull the gun out.”

Police say it’s not everyday their cars are broken into.  Not only was the car locked but so the gun lock where the suspect stole the shotgun.

Bashore says, “We always think it’s secure in a police car and all the equipment we have and there was a situation where we have to safe guard, the car’s locked and weapons locked and you’re determined enough you can get them out.”

Bashore says officers pinged the teen’s cell phone and located him at a nearby cemetery.  Officers retrieved the weapon which he never used.  There are no injuries to report.  The teen is charged with theft from a motor vehicle, theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief, and vandalism.

Due to his mental instability from a rocky relationship, Bashore says they believe he should be in a hospital instead of  behind bars.  His preliminary hearing is June 16th.  The car is now at the township garage under repairs.
