A tractor-trailer driver was killed along Interstate 81 in Franklin County on Tuesday morning, investigators said. It happened in the northbound lanes of I-81 near mile marker 10 in Guildford Township around 4:52 a.m.

According to police reports, the driver,┬áSteven Lee Winfrfey, 51, from Roanoke, Virginia, radioed another trucker who was driving right behind him and told him he wasn’t feeling well. Seconds later–the tractor-trailer swerved off the interstate and into a cement storm drain where it burst into flames.

The other tractor-trailer driver stopped to help–but the flames were too intense, police said.

Winfrey was pronounced dead at the scene.

I-81 Northbound operated with only one open lane in the area of the accident for hours.
