Police: Tractor-trailer driver felt ill moments before crashing on I-81

A tractor-trailer driver was killed along Interstate 81 in Franklin County on Tuesday morning, investigators said. It happened in the northbound lanes of I-81 near mile marker 10 in Guildford Township around 4:52 a.m.

According to police reports, the driver, Steven Lee Winfrfey, 51, from Roanoke, Virginia, radioed another trucker who was driving right behind him and told him he wasn’t feeling well. Seconds later–the tractor-trailer swerved off the interstate and into a cement storm drain where it burst into flames.

The other tractor-trailer driver stopped to help–but the flames were too intense, police said.

Winfrey was pronounced dead at the scene.

I-81 Northbound operated with only one open lane in the area of the accident for hours.
