Jay Paterno is suing Penn State University for at least $1 million following his dismissal from the school’s football coaching staff in early 2012. Paterno filed the lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia Monday. Former assistant coach Bill Kenney is also a plaintiff in the case.

Jay Paterno, the son of longtime head coach Joe Paterno, alleges the school “reacted in mid-January 2012 with rashness and without basis by prematurely releasing from Penn State’s employment the majority of the Penn State football coaching staff…”

The lawsuit also states, “Penn State terminated each of them (Paterno and Kenney) at the height of the Sandusky Scandal’s dark shroud and without any attempt whatsoever by Penn State to preserve the reputations of these guiltless individuals.”

Paterno and Kenney say being dismissed from their jobs at the time they were made it more difficult to get jobs at other colleges or the professional level or with media companies.

The lawsuit says the two “seek damages in excess of one million dollars.”
