If mother nature cooperatives, spraying to control adult mosquito populations will happen during the evening hours on Wednesday, August 6, in Manchester Township, York County.  The operation will cover the residential and commercial areas in the vicinity of North George Street, from Masonic Drive to Emigsville and east along Woodland View Drive to Grim Lane.  Samples collected by PA Department of Environmental Protection Vector Management indicate high mosquito populations capable of transmitting West Nile virus in these areas.

The area was previously sprayed on Monday, July 28.  Signs will be posted the day of the spray event to inform local residents.  The rain date for the spray event will be Thursday, August 7, 2014.

All spray events are conducted by the York County West Nile Virus Program staff.  A truck mounted ULV spray used will be Biomist 3+15 ULV and will be applied at 1.5 ounces per acre.  The product is designed to provide quick knockdown and effective control of adult mosquitoes.   The insecticide is applied in concentrations significantly below what someone would use spraying a commercial insect control product in their home.

Certain species of mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, which, when transmitted to people, can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis.
