The hit show Amish Mafia has proven to be a success. After three seasons it’s now being distributed in Europe and South America, but not everyone’s a fan. “It’s actually bigoted. this is not an accurate portrayal of our area” said Mary Haverstick, a Lancaster organizer who helped to found the Respect Amish Movement. The movement consists of a group of roughly 200 churches in Lancaster County, all of which want to see Amish Mafia taken off the air.

One of those churches is First Presbyterian in Lancaster. The head Pastor Jeoff Kohler works with the Amish and said the stars of the show are exploiting their image. “These folks are taking advantage of that gentleness and trying to promote an image which denigrates it and challenges it which is really inappropriate” said Kohler. FOX43 Legal Analyst Steven Breit has represented the Amish for the last 20 years in court. He has also represented some of the show’s stars as well as appeared on Amish Mafia every season since it began, and he’s glad to see this latest round of opposition. “They put the show back on the radar map. Because now I think individuals are going to want to watch this show to see what these groups are talking about” said Breit.
