Hundreds of local high school soccer players are vying to come out on top of a special tournament in Adams County this weekend.
16 teams are taking part in the “5 Angels Memorial Soccer Tournament” held at the Utz Soccer Fields in Conewago Township.
This is the third year for the event, held in honor of five New Oxford High School soccer players who were killed in a car crash on December 5, 2011 in Hamilton Township, Adams County.
Casey Sheridan, Chelsea McFalls, Oscar Banda, Anthony Campos and Diego Aguilar loved playing the game and the huge tournament is a way to remember them.
Margaret Sheridan, who lost her daughter in the crash says, “We’re five sets of parents that have never done anything like this before, but we banded together and decided that all of their young lives, they made us proud as parents and now we’ve chosen to make them proud.”
All of the money raised from this weekend’s tournament goes to fund soccer programs in New Oxford and Hanover. It also provides college scholarships to three deserving New Oxford High School seniors.
At this point, the tournament is so popular, there is a waiting list for teams to take part.
