A York County man, suffering from a chronic muscle disease, is using his love for cars to gain independence.
Chris Sauerbaum and his wife Heather Sloat are driving for independence. Chris suffers from muscular dystrophy and sometimes uses his power wheelchair to get to work.
The couple held a car show and fundraising event in Mount Wolf on Saturday, hoping to come close to their goal of putting a down payment on a customized truck for Chris.
The truck will include steering, gas and brakes all in a joystick, as well as a lift mechanism for Chris’ wheelchair.
“Right now I spend five hours a day commuting in the morning just because of riding the chair from working so, it’ll be great,” Chris said.
The couple is still trying to reach their goal of $10,000.
“This will be amazing just to be able to see him drive and to have to opportunity to have that independence,” Heather said.
The York County Car Show Club “Visual Reality” challenges you to a 100 dollar or more donation, which it will match, and put toward the truck.
