Harrisburg City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to ask Dauphin County to suspend funding from hotel tax revenues to the National Civil War Museum after Mayor Eric Papenfuse cited concerns with the museum’s financing in recent weeks.

“An unelected, unaccountable board is controlling millions of dollars of city assets,” Papenfuse said in a news release.  “The city just can’t afford this any longer.”

The resolution calls for the Dauphin County Commission to stop transferring hotel tax revenues to the museum. That money is meant to promote tourism for the city, said Papenfuse. Instead, he pointed out the money is being used to pay utility bills and for other basic operations.

Councilman Ben Allat asked employees of the museum to attend a public hearing regarding the use of funds. A date for that hearing has not been set.
