Harrisburg’s Treasurer John Campbell has been charged with felony theft. “It’s a very sad and distressing story absolutely. And it took me completely by shock” said Harrisburg’s Mayor Eric Papenfuse.

It stems from  Campbell’s work with the Historic Harrisburg Association where he previously served as Executive Director. “It’s alleged that Mr. Campbell wrote several checks to himself, to his personal account. Those totaled in excess of eight thousand four hundred dollars” said Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico.

The association’s leaders noticed the bank account was low last week when they tried to write a check for Light Up Harrisburg, which is a program that helps to install new lights throughout the city. That’s when the district attorney’s office got involved.

The Historic Harrisburg Association turned an email over to prosecutors from Campbell. In it he admits to stealing money in order to pay for college and medical bills. Campbell is not accused of stealing taxpayer money in his role as city treasurer.
