It's not something you expect to see or hear about in this rural part of Lancaster County. A quiet stretch along the 500 block of Clearview Road in Clay Township. But that all changed Thursday night.

"My little daughter Matty told us, she's four, she told us this morning that she heard gun shots and that she was in her room on her knees praying that God would keep her safe," said Elsa Martin.

Martin lives right next door and says this is a parent's worst nightmare. According to police, two men wearing masks, dressed in dark clothing entered a home on Clearview Road at 11 o'clock Thursday night and started shooting at two other men inside. Police say Brett Simmons was killed. His father was taken to Lancaster General Hospital. Officials wouldn't release details on his condition.

One man tells FOX43, he's lived in the neighborhood for nearly 15 years. "This is a good area. This just goes to show it can happen anywhere," said Keith Nichols.

He says the Simmons family are good people and is shocked by the whole thing. "It's frightening no matter where you live but that's the world we live in. You just got to take precautions, keep your door locked and stay vigilant," he added.

The Lancaster County District Attorney's office and Northern Lancaster Regional Police wouldn't comment on whether the family was targeted or if this was just an isolated incident but say the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Northern Lancaster Regional Police at 717-733-0965.
