Richard Neff has been drawn to the sound of a banjo since he was a teenager. After learning to play he wanted to get his own. So 33 years ago he got a friend of his who made instruments to build him one. “It was custom made for me so it really is most valuable to me,” Neff said.

However shortly after he got it someone broke into his house and stole it along with a guitar. “I thought I’d never see these instruments again. I called all the pawn shops in the area, talked to the police,” said Neff. However it was gone. And eventually, as the years went by, he gave up hope. Until the same friend that built it for him saw it for sale online. It was being sold at an estate auction in Maryland. So Neff went to check it out.
