A local bridge now bears the name of a fallen WWII airman.
Senator Pat Vance, Representative Mike Regan, and Congressman Scott Perry joined the community at the American Legion Post 974 for a bridge dedication ceremony in honor of Staff Sergeant Guy E. Shelley Jr. in Fairview Township, York County.
Drivers will now see Shelley's name on the Old York Road Bridge over the P.A. Turnpike near New Cumberland.
The New Cumberland native died while trying to get help after his plane crashed in a Libyan desert during WWII.
"It's impossible for us to imagine the hardship and the suffering that befell Staff Sergeant Shelley and the rest of the crew of the "Lady Be Good" in April of 1943. But, it does demonstrate the determination and the endurance capable of the human spirit when in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds-- these men carried on. Let us never forget their sacrifices, and the sacrifices this generation made for all," American Legion Department of Pennsylvania Vice Commander Robert John said.
Eight other airmen were also lost in the plane crash. All but one of the bodies were recovered. Shelley was 26 years-old at the time of the crash.
The American Legion that helped host the ceremony is also named after Shelley.
