(CNN) — A 9-month-old Virginia baby died after she was left alone in her crib for 16 hours while her parents drank, police said.

Prince William Police said Avarice Alexander was put in her crib by her father, Adam Alexander, around 8:30 p.m. on October 4 at the family’s home in Nokesville. The baby rolled onto her stomach immediately, and no one checked on the infant for over 16 hours, authorities said.

Avarice’s mother, Jasmyne Alexander, returned from work to the home she shared with Adam, his mother and sister around 11:30 p.m. Authorities said both parents started drinking, leaving their baby alone in her crib the entire night into the following afternoon.

Jasmyne went to bed around 3 a.m. and Adam stayed up until 9 a.m., authorities said.

When Jasmyne Alexander checked on her daughter the afternoon of October 5, the baby wasn’t responsive, police said. Avarice was declared dead at the scene.

A few hours later, Jasmyne Alexander posted online asking for money to help bury her child, according to CNN affiliate WJLA.

Police said the parents had not taken Avarice to a doctor for the past seven months, even after noticing Avarice had problems breathing.

Jasmyne and Adam Alexander have been charged with felony child neglect. If convicted they could face 10 years in prison.

Police said the investigation into Avarice’s death is ongoing.

HLN reached out to Jasmyne and Adam Alexander for a comment, but calls were not returned.

This is just ridiculous. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to reproduce. This hurts my heart, I have 4 children and would never EVER even imagine doing this to them. They should do more then 10 years in prison. I’m saddened and may this baby girl rest in peace. And may her poor excuse of parents live with this guilt forever.

This is unbelievable! The drinking alone proves these two were too immature to be parents. They need more then 10 years in prison and I feel both should get the fix so they can’t have anymore kids. I am so sad to read this.

    • Kerri

How does drinking mean they are immature? I have 4 healthy children and drink on occasion. I’ve never let my children unattended for 16 hours. These 2 without a doubt don’t deserve to see the light of day again, but to put it that way says every parent that drinks is immature is a bit unfair.

yea, drinkin is not a sign of immaturity. i have a son and im a wine drinker. his needs are always put before mine. whats immature is having a child, pawnin the child off to someone else to watch so you can go out and get drunk.

They named their child Avarice – excessive or insatiable desire for wealth or gain, inordinate greed. That speaks volumes about their mindset and priorities.

  • OneMan'sOpinion

The parents look like they are still in high school. Are they over 21? By the way, Mom, save your drinking money to bury your child.

  • Annon

Sooooo there were two other adults in the house in addition to these two asshats and nobody even bothered to check on this child?! A child that young would not normally be quiet for 16 hours! Not only that…but NOBODY in the house felt maybe the child needed to see a doctor? Pathetic. Everyone in that house, not just the parents, need to be charged.

  • Debra Gares

WOW! Animals treat their babies better! This is so sad. They only get 10 years? Really? Leave them locked in a cell and throw away the key.

  • Susqnana

Has anyone ever watched a mama bear look after her young? They are excellent parents and we cage them up and move them away from an area if people think they are “pests”……..God help our future generations with the parenting skills that are being taught to us humans

  • Rebecca Golden

My hearts bleedd for this child. I couldn’t imagine loosen my boys@! Mothers and fathers get it together!

  • jrupp53

Well when you drink until 3 on the mom ING without Che king on your child I would say is immature and irresponsible, this story is so sad for that cute little girl, these so called parents are gonna have this guilt for the rest of their lives

  • jrupp53

No Kerri That make sense u ignorant because those two were drinking til 3 am and never checked on the poor baby!! So yeah that makes them immature and irresponsible and THAT POOR BABY SUFFERED FOR it!!”these so called parents should be made to suffer for the rest of their lives besides living with the guilt!!

  • Dan

This just sickens me to see how ppl treat there babys these day if ya want kids then you need to grow up and be responsable this just makes me sick to the tummy and they should get more then 10 years and they shouldnt aloud kids if they cant look after them right

  • Anna Nora

They should be charged with murder. How can you not go hug your child when you get home from work? Or check on her, kiss her. This is sick! I hope they rot in prison!

  • Lisa Halliwell

16 hours?????…who doesn’t check on a baby every 1-3 hours, I check on my cats for god sake, if they get too quiet…disgraceful that NO ONE with four adults in the house cared to check on that child…they should all be held accountable and put in prison for no less than 20 years. Like that child didn’t need to eat and need a diaper change….disgraceful….child neglect…it’s blatant abuse. Losers- they deserve the book thrown at them. Close your legs and don’t reproduce!

  • Sam

Only 10 years!? You’re both disgusting, and do not deserve to breath the same air your daughter did. You didn’t take her to the doctors for 7 months!? Then had the nerve to ask for money from people. I hope you both rot in a dark place in prison for 10 years, and then hell for eternity for what you’ve done.
