Dauphin County's Victims/Witness Assistance Program and County Commissioners are taking steps to help domestic violence victims and their families in Harrisburg.

They hosted an event on Thursday to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the Dauphin County Courthouse to raise money for victims.

The community came together to show their support-- selling baked goods, jewelry, and holding a gift basket raffle.

The free event featured guest speakers, facts about domestic violence and information on support and service.

In addition , the courthouse fountain, along Front Street in Harrisburg, has turned purple in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Organizers hope the event will help give a voice to victims affected by what officials call an epidemic.

"In our office, we see so many people coming through our door-- men, woman and children-- who are plagued by domestic violence and we're just honored that we can be here to help and get some people on the right path, " Dauphin County VWAP Executive Director Amy Rosenberry said.

According to the P.A. Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 158 people lost their lives in Pennsylvania last year as a result of domestic violence. County commissioners say if anyone needs help, the county is available for support. They say their goal is to encourage people to call for help and hopefully save lives.

Anyone in need of assistance can call 717-780-7075 to talk to experts at the Dauphin County VWAP and/ or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
