UPDATE:  Upper Allen Police say the driver of the pickup truck transporting the unsecured mattress has been identified as Douglas Campbell, 49 of Cornwall. Campbell turned himself in to Upper Allen Police today. Summary charges for Campbell are pending the conclusion of the crash investigation.

 

UPPER ALLEN TOWNSHIP (WPMT) Four people were injured Sunday after the vehicle they were riding in struck a concrete barrier to avoid a mattress that had fallen off a pickup truck along Route 15 in Cumberland County.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. in the northbound lane of Route 15 near Grantham Road in Upper Allen Township.

According to police, an unidentified pickup truck hauling a trailer lost a mattress while heading north along Route 15. A vehicle following behind the trailer tried to avoid the mattress and hit a concrete median before overturning. Investigators said the driver of the pickup truck did not stop to give information or provide aid.

Four people, including two children, were taken to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center for treatment.

Police are trying to identify the driver of the pickup truck who was hauling the mattress. Anyone with information is asked to call Upper Allen Township Police at 717-238-9676. An anonymous tip line is also available by calling or texting 717-850-UAPD (8273).
