HARRISBURG, PA. (WPMT)- The Pa. Department of Health is offering free potassium iodide, or KI tablets to residents who live within a 10 mile radius of the Commonwealth’s five nuclear power plants, including Three Mile Island, in Dauphin County and Peachbottom Atomic Station in York County. The tablets will be available on Thursday, November 20 from 2 pm to 7 pm at the following sites:
* Lower Swatara Township Building, 1499 Spring Garden Drive, Middletown
* Hummelstown Fire Hall, 249 E. Main Street, Hummelstown
* Fairview Township Fire Department, 340 Lewisberry Road, New Cumberland
* Manchester Township Municipal Building, 3200 Farmtrail Road, York
Expired pills can be returned at the distribution sites.
Potassium iodide helps protect the thyroid glad against the harmful radioactive iodine that may be released but no one should take KI tablets unless directed to do so by state health officials or the governor. Anyone can take the tablets unless they are allergic to KI. The tablets are safe for pregnant women, women who breastfeeding, people on thyroid medicine, children and infants.
Four 65 milligram tablets will be provided for each adult. Children will be given smaller doses based upon their age. Directions on how to store the tablets and when to taken them will also be provided.
