A local doctor on a mission to find a cure for breast cancer is being recognized.
The PA Breast Cancer Coalition presented a $100,000 research grant to Dr. Craig Meyer of Penn State Hershey College of Medicine in Derry Township, Dauphin County on Thursday. The PBCC awarded Dr. Meyers with a $50,000 grant that was matched by an anonymous donor.
Meyers is working on breakthrough research using a virus to kill cancer cells in certain types of tumors without harming the healthy cells around them.
"I want to say that this is the type of research that we think may eventually lead to a breakthrough," PBCC Founder Pat Halphin-Murphy said.
The research is based on the adeno-associated virus type 2 which is a small virus that infects humans but does not cause disease.
"As Scientists, we're taught to doubt everything, to question everything we do, and I will continue to doubt until I actually see people come up to me and thank me for what has happened," Dr. Meyers said.
The PBCC has awarded more than $3 million in grants to researchers in Pennsylvania. PA residents have the opportunity to give by participating in the "Refunds for Breast Cancer Research" campaign. "Refunds for Research" allows Pennsylvanians to donate all or part of their state income tax refund directly to those grants on the PA-40 tax form.
