Wednesday is typically the busiest travel day of the year. With it expected to be a messy one, many are worried about getting to their destinations safely, and on time.
According to AAA, more than 41 million people will drive this Thanksgiving holiday, and more than three million will fly.
Driving
To help keep drivers safe, PennDOT crews have spent much of Tuesday treating the highways. Starting at 4 a.m. Wednesday PennDOT crews will start working 12-hour shifts to monitor the storm. "If we need to plow we will plow, if we need to put salt down, we will put salt down, we will be patrolling until the storm is done," said PennDOT Spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.
"Thanksgiving is the time where we have the most crashes. We are already cracking down on seat belts and impaired drivers, but now we have to add weather on top of it. But, the overall focus is, it's the holidays. You don't want any family to deal with tragedy because of not wearing a seat belt or being an aggressive driver," said Schreffler.
Flying
If you're flying Wednesday, airlines suggest you give yourself plenty of extra travel time. Scott Miller, with Harrisburg International Airport, says while some flights may be delayed or cancelled, airports are prepared for snow.
"If it comes down to normal snowfall our staff can keep up with it, and push it away, and keep the runways and roads open. If it's all rain that's not a big deal. The one thing that is challenging for airports and airplanes is of course freezing rain or sleet," said Miller.
Miller recommends downloading your airline's app for your smart phone, and signing up for text and email alerts. "Snow is generally not a huge deal. It can be plowed, it can be pushed. It may cause some delays, maybe even a few cancellations, but if you are signed up for the airlines flight status they will notify you and rebook you," said Miller.
