Derry Township police say several businesses reported they “fell or almost fell victim” to a scam this weekend.

Police call it the “Green Dot” scam. They say the businesses received phone calls from someone claiming to be from PPL in which they were told their electric service would be terminated if they didn’t pay an outstanding bill.

Police say in some of those cases the amount requested was similar to their current balance.

“The caller instructed the business representatives to secure the amount in Green Dot cards or to pay immediately by phone,” police explained in a Facebook post. The cards are a popular type of prepaid debit cards.
