ADAMS COUNTY, PA(WPMT) An Adams County man faces multiple charges after a high speed chase that saw speeds topping 120 miles per hour. The incident began last Wednesday, December 10, at about 11:20 pm in Cumberland Township.
Township police attempted to pull over three motorcycles in the 1000 block of Baltimore Pike for traffic violations. Two of the riders stopped, but then rider, driving a dark colored sport bike with LED lighting with a female passenger onboard, fled northbound on Baltimore Pike. Gettysburg Borough and East Adams Regional Police joined in the pursuit which police ended due to safety reasons on Centennial Road in Mount Pleasant Township.
During the pursuit, the driver committed various traffic violations including running red lights, passing numerous vehicles in no passing lanes and hitting speeds in excess of 120 mph.
Pursuing police were able to view part of the motorcycle’s registration plate. According to PennDOT records, the bike was registered to Lance Hawkes, 40, of New Oxford.
Police later located the motorcycle parked in an open garage at Hawkes home on Kohler School Road. The license plate had been removed. Officers attempted to make contact with the home’s occupants but no one came to the door.
Township police in their investigation determined that Hawkes was at the Pike Bar and Restaurant a short time before the pursuit. Surveillance video showed Hawkes exiting the bar with the other riders from the traffic stop. Police also spoke to several witnesses who saw Hawkes at the Pike.
Armed with a search warrant police went back to Hawkes home and seized a 2004 Suzuki GSX1300 motorcycle, several motorcycle license plates and numerous motorcycle helmets.
An arrest warrant was obtain charging Hawkes with Fleeing and Eluding, Tampering with Physical Evidence and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. He turned himself in to on Friday, December 12. Following arraignment he was released on $10,000 bail.
Cumberland Township Police submitted a forfeiture request for Hawkes’ Suzuki motorcycle.
