A five-week search for a missing West Chester University student ended in heartbreak for the man’s family. Search crews pulled the body of 21-year-old Shane Montgomery from the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia around noon on Saturday.

Shane went missing on Thanksgiving Eve of 2014 after  reportedly being asked to leave a local bar. The most recent break in the case came two weeks ago when investigators found his car keys near the river. Investigators also recovered surveillance video  that showed him heading towards a parking lot along the banks of the icy river.

Montgomery’s family confirmed that the body was his and released a statement on Facebook after the discovery.

“Today we did what we promised. We found and brought Shane home. We want to thank the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit, Philadelphia Marine Unit, Northwest Detectives, the Philadelphia Police Department, Saint John the Baptist, Mike Rose and the Brew Pub and their employees. We want to thank everyone for their support, prayers and love and ask that they continue to pray for our family during this trying time. At this time, we ask that you please respect our privacy. We need time to mourn together as a family.”
