A group of volunteers is working on one goal in York: helping a hardworking single mother in York build a brand new house in the 400 block of West Princess Street. "Coming from a single parent home I feel like this is something that a lot of people deserve especially if they work hard," said York Habitat for Humanity volunteer Kaylah Gooden.
The mother, named Judy, used to live in a homeless shelter with her daughter, but has since gone to school and become a certified nursing assistant. Her story is one of many. York Habitat for Humanity has helped more than a 100 families find homes. The vetting process to make sure that a family qualifies can take more than a year. "This is a hand-up not a hand-out. The families are helping doing sweat equity, budget counseling and all the requirements of our program," said York Habitat for Humanity executive director Debbie Krout-Althoff.
That money is then used to build more homes, thereby funding new projects with payments from families who have already benefited. "It's why this program is so successful and why there's so little defaults because the families work so hard for what they have," said Krout-Althoff.
