St. Louis, MO (KTVI) — A woman was found Tuesday morning with a gunshot to her lower leg after a confrontation what police thought were car thieves. Her son showed up to school with a minor gunshot wound to his leg after the gun battle. Later that day the father was arrested for a large amount of marijuana found in the home.

The family lives in a home in the 3900 block of Lafeyette had the garage door open and their car running. They were getting ready to take their three children to school. That’s when the father saw a man with a gun approaching the home. He struggled with the suspect, then the mother grabbed a gun from the home and exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

The mother and her 8-year-old son were both shot. The mother was hit in the leg, the boy was grazed in the ankle.

Seconds later the suspect was racing away from the scene with the car that was in the garage. Police are still looking for the car. It’s a black 2006 4 door Dodge Charger RT with a license plate FA524K. Police are also looking for a gold Chevy Malibu believed to be involved in the crime.

The mother was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. Initially, no one knew the boy had been hit. He was taken to his school in the 4000 block of Papin. Shortly after, he was also taken to a hospital. The 8-year-old is in stable condition.

Late Tuesday afternoon St. Louis police arrested a 43-year-old male from the home for marijuana found in the residence. Police say there was a large amount of marijuana in the home, plastic bags and scales.
