Teens discussed safety issues in school at a forum in Harrisburg. They gathered Wednesday night at Bethany A.M.E. Church.
It’s part of a nationwide initiative from President Obama called “My Brother’s Keeper.” The goal is to support students to graduate and go on to more academic and career success.
The topic this time was safety. The Harrisburg School Board is weighing a plan to put police officers in schools. Some parents have opposed it but these students said they support the idea.
They say they’re concerned about outsiders coming into their schools and weapons in school.
“Our parents want the best for us, so if there’s a police there, they shouldn’t really complain about that, because they’re taking steps to secure our safety and our education,” says Kevin Crespo, a sophomore at Harrisburg.
The group meets every two weeks at Bethany A.M.E. Church in Harrisburg and the meetings are open to the public.
The students say, at future meetings, they hope to discuss lowering the dropout rate and how to stop bullying.
