LANCASTER, PA (WPMT)  Kenneth L. White, 37, of Lancaster is identified as the man shot by a city police officer after a brief pursuit Wednesday morning.

The incident began when witnesses saw White driving erratically in a Chevy Impala in the area of the bus station in the 200 block of N. Queen Street.  The Impala traveled over the curb onto the sidewalk nearly striking two pedestrians.  Witnesses stated White then parked, exited the car and staggered into the Wine & Spirits store. Witness said that White appeared to be under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

After leaving the liquor store, White got back into the Impala, headed north on Queen Street and then turned west onto Lemon Street.  Police began to pursue the Impala. White struck an occupied vehicle  near the intersection of Prince and Lemon Streets.  He then drove west on Lemon Street and stopped briefly at the intersection of N. Mulberry Street.  Seizing the moment, pursuing officers approached White’s car and an officer attempted to open the front passenger side door. White suddenly accelerated rapidly, nearly striking the officer.

White continued west, running through several traffic lights. He nearly struck a school bus after running a stop sign at Buchanan Avenue and President Avenue. He did strike a vehicle at President and Columbia Avenues and then struck another vehicle in the 400 block of Manor Street.

White eventually crashed at Manor Street and Campbell Avenue. He drove in reverse in an attempt to run over an officer who was standing behind the Impala. Despite numerous commands to stop, White drove forward again causing officers to fear for their safety.  That is when an officer fired two shots at the Impala.  One of those shots passed through the driver side door and hit White in his upper right leg.

Charges against White include three counts of Aggravated Assault, for nearly running over three police officers, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, for nearly hitting two pedestrians, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police and Fleeing from a Police Vehicle with Lights and Siren Activated. Numerous other charges are expected as the investigation continues.
