The attorney for a Pittsburgh-area teen, accused of stabbing 21 people, says mental health experts need more time to treat him.

During a hearing, defense attorney Pat Thomassey says Alex Hribal’s condition is improving; but mental health experts need extra time to complete a more detailed evaluation.

Police charged the 17-year-old as an adult in the April 2014 assault of 20 students and a security guard at Franklin Regional High School. Defense experts diagnosed Hribal with schizophrenia and depression.

The judge gave the defense an additional 30 days to file pretrial motions. If found guilty, Hribal could face up to 20 years in prison for each count of attempted murder and aggravates assault. Thomassey is expected to ask that the teen’s case be moved to juvenile court.
