HARRISBURG (WPMT)-Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse says because the city will be experiencing very cold weather over the next several days–the city will operate a number of emergency shelters for the homeless.

“City residents should prepare for a sustained period of extremely cold weather,” Mayor Papenfuse said. “People should watch out for elderly neighbors who may need assistance, and special caution should be taken to protect pets that live outdoors. We are urging everyone to seek shelter and be safe in this extreme weather.”

The Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness has issued an advisory warning people who are homeless to seek shelter.  Bethesda Mission will be open to everyone who needs shelter throughout the expected period of extreme weather.

Below is the complete list of Harrisburg shelter locations and hours of operation.

Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven – 8 p.m. – 7 a.m.
(for Men)
1805 N. 12th St., Harrisburg
Doors open at 8 p.m. Guests are signed in until 10:00 PM. Coffee, tea, small snack available to single men. Coffee  is available in the morning.  Volunteers still needed on some nights. Call Christian Churches United, 717 230-9550 for details.

YWCA of Greater Harrisburg – 8 p.m. – 7 a.m.

1101 Market Street, Harrisburg
The YWCA offers overnight shelter for women who are living on the street during the cold weather months beginning Dec. 1 and ending March 31. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. Light refreshments are available. Exit is at 7 a.m. the following morning. Volunteers are needed. Contact Julia Hoskins – 234-7931 x3052 .

Bethesda Mission – 24 Hours 2/14-2/16/15
611 Reily Street, Harrisburg
Bethesda Mission’s Men’s Shelter is operating under Hazardous Weather rules through March 2015.  Officials at the shelter say no one will be turned away regardless of how many people show up. Arriving early is encouraged, and those coming for dinner will be permitted to stay through the night and through the next day so long as hazardous weather conditions exist.
