Berks County man arrested in appliance repair scam, police say

UPPER ALLEN TOWNSHIP (WPMT)-A Berks County man was arrested last week after he conned an Upper Allen Township man out of money in an appliance repair scam, police said.

Terry Lee Harner, 46, of Mohnton, is charged with deceptive or fraudulent business practices, theft by deception and theft by unlawful taking. He was arrested Feb. 27 and taken to Cumberland County Prison.

Police said Harner took money from the victim in December 2013 for parts and then never returned.  The victim contacted Upper Allen Township Police in August 2014 to report the  scam. Harner was involved in similar scams in Cumberland, Dauphin and York counties, according to police reports. He had multiple warrants out for his arrest–but officers had trouble finding him.

Last week–investigators were able to lure Harner to a location for an appliance repair. When Harner arrived, police took him into custody.

If anyone has been the victim of a similar crime, police urge you to contact the law enforcement agency in the area where the crime occurred. Upper Allen Police can be reached at at 717-238-9676.
