Lawrence first appeared as Raven Darkholme and her shape-shifting alter-ego in 2011’s “X-Men: First Class” and reprised the role in 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” It’s a matter of debate as to whether or not she’s a good mutant, a bad mutant, or merely a tragically misguided one.”That’s what I think is interesting — she’s not just a good girl gone bad, she’s a good girl that’s been hurt and kind of finds a resolve or comfort on this side that she really thinks is right,” Lawrence told IGN when she first took the part. “She doesn’t think that she’s going to the bad side or the dark side, I think that that was just what made more sense to her.”

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is set to hit theaters on May 27, 2016. The filmmakers have indicated that Mystique’s role will be a pivotal one, as it has in the past two films.

“Part of what’s really interesting about Mystique’s character is that she is, in some ways, the child of both Erik and Charles,” “Days of Future” past writer/producer Simon Kinberg said in an interview last fall. “She grew up with Charles and then she became a woman with Erik, so her being the cross-pollination, if you will, of those two philosophies and those two men is something we can explore in the movie too.”

Prior to Lawrence, Rebecca Romijn played Mystique in “X-Men,” “X-Men 2” and “X-Men: The Last Stand” as well as having a brief cameo in “First Class.”
