A Pennsylvania State Tooper is in  critical condition after being hit along Interstate 81 just before 3 p.m. Friday.

State police say Sgt. Robert Bemis, a 22-year veteran of the force was struck while helping a driver on the side of the highway in Schuylkill County.

Officials say Sgt.  Bemis got out of his cruiser after seeing a car broke down and on fire on South  I-81 ,north of Pottsville.

While the trooper was helping the driver along the interstate, police say 50-year-old Jamie Edmonds of Virginia was driving south on I-81 when she  lost control of her car trying to avoid hitting a truck that was traveling in front of her.

Edmonds crashed into Bemis’ cruiser, pushing it into Bemis and the driver he was helping.

According to police, the trooper was the only one that was seriously injured. He was flown from the scene by Life flight. The driver and Edmonds were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

I-81 was closed for 5 hours Friday, while police investigated the crash.
