This is Flood Safety Awareness Week.  Tuesday’s top is T.A.D.D.  What is TADD?

It a NOAA National Weather Service campaign to warn people of the dangers of walking through or driving through flood waters.

There are more deaths due to flooding than any other severe weather related hazard each year.   People underestimate the force and power of water.  More than half of all flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream.  Many deaths are preventable.  Hence the phase, Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Safety rules to keep you safe:

1. Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio

2. Get to higher ground if flooding occurs.  Get out of areas prone to flooding.

3. Avoid already flooded areas, especially if water is flowing fast.  Do not attempt to cross flowing streams.

4. road beds may be washed out under flood waters.  Never drive through flooded roadways.

5. Do not camp or park your car along streams, particularly during  threatening conditions.

6. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
