Bridge Work to Close Westbound Lanes of Rt. 581 in Lemoyne this Weekend
PennDOT

LEMOYNE, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) advises travelers that the westbound Route 581 bridge over South 10th Street in Lemoyne, Cumberland County, will again be closed this weekend. The closure  is necessary for the paving of a latex-modified concrete overlay on the new bridge deck. Westbound Route 581 is scheduled to be closed at the interchange with Interstate 83 starting early Saturday morning, June 20, at 3 AM and continuing no later than 6 AM on Monday, June 22.

This weekend’s work is dependent on the weather; and the potential for rain on Saturday could prompt the postponement of this bridge work and road closure to the following weekend.

PennDOT advises northbound I-83 motorists headed to Route 581 to use the Capital Beltway and continue on northbound I-83 through Harrisburg to Interstate 81, and then south on I-81 to eastbound Route 581.

Southbound I-83 motorists headed to westbound Route 581 will be directed to use Exit 40-B to Carlisle Road, to 18th Street, to Hummel Avenue, to State Road, to Gettysburg Road, to Simpson Ferry Road, to Lower Allen Drive, to northbound Route 15, and finally to westbound Route 581. Motorists may want to consider using the Pennsylvania Turnpike or other alternate routes.

While paving is underway on the westbound Route 581 bridge structure, traffic on eastbound Route 581 will be restricted to a single lane. This is necessary because some of the paving equipment will extend into the opposite direction of traffic. In addition, 10th Street under Route 581 will be closed to traffic during the overnight hours, and flaggers will assist motorists through the underpass on 10th Street during the day.

The paving this weekend (and also next weekend for the bridge that carries eastbound Route 581 over 10th Street) is part of the work that began earlier this month to replace the superstructures of the bridges that carry Route 581 over 10th Street.
