WARRINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa.– The beaches at Gifford Pinchot State Park are closed for swimming until further notice.

The temporary closure was prompted after Saturday’s heavy rainfall. Management said they decided to close the beaches due to concern about the public’s health and safety. They plan to reopen the beaches when the safety concerns have been eliminated.

“We also have elevated bacteria levels, but just the depth of the water now is increased by two feet, wo when bathers are out here, the maximum depth would have been 5 feet, and it’s now 7 feet,” Robert Deffner, the park manager with PA State Parks, said.

No timetable was given as to when the beaches will reopen. Rangers will submit samples for two water tests to be completed in the coming days, Deffner said.

The day use areas remain open for picnicking, and there are no restrictions on boating or fishing. Management said some areas may have restricted access because of high water levels.
