A massive wildfire in Alaska has forced hundreds of people to leave their homes.

The Sockeye fire has now spread to more than 7,200 acres since it first started burning last Sunday.

Firefighters from all over the country, including here in Central PA, are now heading to Alaska to offer their help.

On Tuesday morning, 40 firefighters pulled from 20 districts within Pennsylvania, met at the Lower Swatara Fire Department.

The two teams, each made up of twenty volunteers, first checked-in and weighed-in before taking off for Harrisburg International Airport.

Their final stop will be Fairbanks, Alaska.

Over the next two weeks the crews will work around the clock in an effort to help control the massive wildfires which have been raging for more than a week now.

As of Monday afternoon, the wildfires were 79% contained.
