Gettysburg, Pa. - It's not unusual to see the Confederate flag displayed here in Central PA and in Gettysburg, you can buy it in just about every other store.

In the wake of the church massacre in Charleston, SC, many are calling for the flag to be taken down from state buildings in South Carolina, and national retailers including Walmart, K-Mart and Sears are banning it from their shelves.

In Gettysburg, some defended the flag as a piece of American history.

"I don't want this to have a domino effect or snowball where they want to take it down from monuments, and basically re-write American history," says Roger Alcorn of Gettysburg, who has ancestors on both sides of the Civil War. "We still want to honor the memory of what they did, not what they fought for but what they did, and their bravery."

But Sandra Thompson, president of the York NAACP, says the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate and more stores should stop selling it.

"It doesn't have a positive message, symbols are messages," she says. "Just like the swastika is a message."

Thompson says the flag is outdated: "It was formed in division, it was formed to maintain status quo and status quo was slavery and control over black people."
