RICHMOND, VA — Vandals scrawled the phrase “Black Lives Matter” on a monument honoring the president of the confederacy, Jefferson Davis.
The damage to the monument in Richmond comes after the governor refused to support a petition to remove statues of confederate leaders from Richmond’s Monument Avenue.
A national debate about confederacy memorials is taking place following an admitted killer’s racially motivated attack at a South Carolina church.
Nine African-Americans were killed.
