HARRISBURG, Pa. — Katie McGinty, chief of staff to Gov. Tom Wolf (D), has resigned, according to a spokesman for the governor.

McGinty has been in the position since the beginning of the year.

The move comes amid talks among Democratic Party leaders that they want a stronger candidate to take on Sen. Pat Toomey (R) in 2016.

Former Rep. Joe Sestak (D) is already in the race. He narrowly lost to Toomey in 2010.

McGinty hasn’t said yet whether she will enter the race. McGinty ran for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014 but lost to Wolf.

Her decision to resign comes amid a budget stalemate between Wolf and Republican legislators. The budget was due at the end of June.
