PennDOT is joining forces with law enforcement agencies across the state to crack down on aggressive driving.

It’s all part of their ‘HEAT on 30’ initiative which officially kicks off Thursday morning.

Over the next few weeks, police at the state level as well as local municipalities will be beefing up patrol along the entire stretch of Route 30 in hopes of reducing the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities on the roadways.

Some of the aggressive driving behaviors they’ll be on the lookout for include running red lights, speeding and tailgating.

“A large majority of crashes involve aggressive driving,” said Fritzi Schreffler, the safety press officer for PennDOT. “A lot of people think that’s road rage, but it’s not. Aggressive driving is typical driving behaviors. If you’re a speeder, if you’re a tailgater; you’re an aggressive driver,” she said.

The ‘HEAT on 30’ campaign is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Program.

It’s funded by part of PennDOT’s $2.5 million investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As part of the educational aspect of the program, PennDOT officials, police as well as other first responders from Central PA will be holding a kickoff event Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at the YTI/Lancaster Campus located at 3050 Hempland Road, Lancaster, PA.

That’s where they’ll inform the public about the 'HEAT on 30' initiative and explain why it's so crucial.

The statewide wave of enforcement will wrap up August 30.
