HARRISBURG, Pa.–The Mulberry Street bridge in Harrisburg will be closed to all traffic for two weeks beginning Monday.

The closure will begin Aug. 3 and remain in effect until Aug. 17, when the bridge will reopen.  A PennDOT spokesperson says the bridge could reopen sooner–depending on the the contractor’s progress and good weather.

The Mulberry Street bridge connects Allison Hill to downtown Harrisburg. Through traffic will be diverted onto 13th Street around Market Street and onto 4th Street.

The two-year, $12.2-million project has been underway since March 2014 in order to rehab the bridge. Last year–the bridge was closed to traffic  as construction crews replaced the old bridge deck. Workers also installed a new concrete barrier between the roadway and the sidewalk, as well as a new pedestrian railing,  new railroad protective fencing, and new bridge lighting and drainage.

Work this year has focused on making substructure and superstructure repairs.

The overall project should wrap up by the end of this year, according to PennDOT.
