MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. — Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane turned herself into authorities in Montgomery County on Saturday afternoon after criminal charges were announced Thursday.
Kane faces nine counts–including perjury and official oppression. She’s accused of leaking what was supposed to be secret grand jury information to a newspaper in Philadelphia.
That leak was related to an investigation into a Philadelphia civil rights leader who was never charged. Prosecutors allege Kane did this out of retaliation. The leak allegedly happened after the story broke in the Philadelphia Inquirer that Kane declined to prosecute several state lawmakers caught on tape taking bribes. Not even two hours after the charges against Kane were announced–Governor Tom Wolf called for her resignation.
Kane continues to maintain her innocence. She has said she will not step down.
Kane’s bail was set at $10,000 unsecured.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 24.
