SALT LAKE CITY – Millersville Borough in Lancaster County is ranked among the safest college towns in these United States according to Utah based SafeWise, a safety and home security company.
Using the most recent FBI crime statistics from 2013, SafeWise calculated the total number of crimes committed in each American town with at least one academic institution of higher education. Then weighted those numbers in relation to population statistics and other important factors. Finally, SafeWise researched relevant safety, health, and educational programs that help make each “Safest College Town” safer and more secure.
After crunching all the numbers, Millersville Borough comes out ranked #22 among the nations safest college towns.
Near Lancaster in world reknown Amish country, Millersville was the site of the first teacher’s academy in Pennsylvania. That academy, the Millersville Normal School, is now Millersville University, one of 14 state owned universities.
Since campus shootings and student-related violence have been on the rise nationwide, Millersville University has taken proactive steps in preventing violence on campus. MU has assembled the Threat Assessment Team, which consists of experts in human resources and employee assistance, law enforcement, university operations, medical knowledge, social equity, and student affairs, to head off safety threats before lives are lost.
Millersville is not the only town with a state owned university ranked among the nation’s safest college towns. Three towns in western Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock, the “Town Known “Round the World”, is ranked #11. Clarion is #17 and California is #29.
