Kansas City, KS —  A Kansas mother is facing charges after her children were found living in a wooden shipping crate in an underground cave.

Officials say deputies were investigating illegal activities in caves on the eastern edge of Kansas City when they found the two young children.

According to the deputies, the four-year-old and six-year-old were alone, barefoot and dirty inside of the ten by eight wooden crate.

They had no water and a cup of dry ramen noodles with dirt in it.

People who own space near where they were found couldn’t believe the news.

The children were taken to hospital… where they were bathed and examined.

Police found and arrested their mother– 24-year-old Brittany Mugrauer.

She faces two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The boys’ grandfather says this whole ordeal is a huge misunderstanding.

He told FOX 4 his daughter worked as a secretary at Underground Diesel, an auto body shop in the caves, and brought the kids to work because they loved being there.

He said when detectives were investigating the caves his daughter was not there because she was taking her boss to the emergency room, and left her children with another employee.

As for the boys hanging out in the crate, it was allegedly built so the boys would have a safe place to play.
