HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition presented a $50,000 research grant today to a doctor from Pittsburgh to help in the fight against breast cancer. The grant went to Dr. Wendie Berg of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Magee-Women's Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Berg is working to make sure fewer women are diagnosed with breast cancer at later, less-treatable stages because they have dense breasts. Dense breast tissue can hide tumors on a mammogram and require additional screenings. Her study plans to determine if 3D mammograms or screening ultrasounds are the most effective way to screen women with high levels of breast density for cancer.

In addition to giving out the grant, Pennsylvania First Lady Frances Wolf attended today's conference to make an announcement about the future of women's health care in the Commonwealth. "My husband's policy is that regardless of the mammogram ordered, Pennsylvania law ensures that every woman has access to a mammogram, whichever one it is, at no cost to herself," explained Mrs. Wolf.
